Baptism

Baptism

Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as daughters and sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated in to the Church and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and in the word.”

Four symbols in the Rite of Baptism express different realities of the sacrament. These special symbols are water, oil, a white garment, and a lighted candle.

  • Water: Cleansing and Life-Giving
  • Oil: Healing, Strengthening, and Being Chosen
  • A White Garment: Putting on Christ
  • A Lighted Candle: Sharing in the Light of Christ

Baptisms are scheduled throughout the year. New parents must attend a baptism prep class which is scheduled at the parent's convenience.
